STUDIO SESSIONS

In Studio Sessions we take you on tour along the work spaces of MAPA artists. We’ve come to our last artist in the upcoming Amsterdam show Rectangle Roots & Paved Tongues, Jeroen Allart. We meet Jeroen in his studio in Rotterdam West. With the city’s modern art museums at a ten minute walking distance, the place seems the perfect hideout for the artist known as ‘the romantic of Rotterdam’. Jeroen talks to us about the winding path to his currently thriving practice, about cherishing lockdowns and following the footsteps of the impressionists. ‘I can imagine that, one day, I’ll take my easel outside.’

This time we speak with Ineke van de Pol, the fifth artist in MAPA’s upcoming Amsterdam show Rectangle Roots & Paved Tongues. We meet Ineke at her home in the Dutch countryside, where she also has a studio, and talk abouther experiences in Japan and China, her passion for nature and the importance of colours.

This time we meet with Robin Pieterse, the fourth artist in MAPA’s upcoming Amsterdam show Rectangle Roots & Paved Tongues. Robin – soon graduating from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (KABK) - meets us on Zoom. She chats to us about how embodied obsessions and colourful fascinations give shape to her internal and external landscapes. ‘I always notice what I’m feeling. It can be an inconvenience, but it’s a great resource for my art.’

In Studio Sessions we take you on tour along the work spaces of MAPA artists. This time we visit Safira Taylor, our third artist in MAPA’s upcoming Amsterdam show Rectangle Roots & Paved Tongues. We meet Safira at her place in the picturesque old streets of the Jordaan in Amsterdam. Currently in between studios, both Safira and her work seem to thrive on being in a constant state of flux. She tells us how photoshoots of beetles and spiders came to inform her artistic practice, one that, much like rewilded nature, is constantly developing. ‘I encourage myself to do something differently every time. Nature works similarly, it has to.’

In Studio Sessions we take you on tour along the work spaces of MAPA artists. This time we visit Axel Roy, whose work is featured in our current exhibition Rectangle Roots & Paved Tongues. We meet Axel at his studio at the old Werkspoorpand on the outskirts of Utrecht, where every 10 minutes, a train rushes by. He talks about the differences between Dutch and French architecture, the misconception of the romantic artist, and breaking social rules. ‘Art is not only what you do, but also how you talk about it.’

This time we visit Laurence Herfs, whose work will feature in the upcoming Amsterdam show Rectangle Roots & Paved Tongues. We meet Laurence at her home in The Hague. She talks to us about the need for safe spaces to create in, and how her roots as a comic book artist shaped her praised graduation work. ‘You have to relate with your body to the bodies in my work.’
