When you’ve acquired a beautiful piece of art and it’s arrived at your home, it’s important to keep it safe and in the best condition possible. After all, you don’t want your cherished painting or sculpture to get damaged. In this blog we go over some basic tips and mistakes.
1. Avoid sun
Keep art out of direct sunlight: sunlight can fade or discolour an artwork over time. If you are displaying your art, make sure it is not in direct sunlight or in a room with a lot of natural light.
2. Handle with care
Always handle art carefully, using both hands to support the piece. Avoid touching the surface of the art, as the oils and dirt from your hands can damage it.
3. The right material(s)
If you need to store your artwork for a certain period of time, make sure to use acid-free materials, such as paper or tissue, to wrap the piece. Acidic materials can discolor or damage the art over time.
4. Cool & dry
Whether hanging or storing, art should always be placed in a cool, dry place with a stable temperature and humidity level. Avoid storing art in damp basements or attics, as these environments can cause damage.
5. Insurance
Consider getting a special insurance for your art collection, especially if it is valuable. This will provide financial protection in the event that something happens to your art, such as damage or theft.
